Maintenance Worker - ParksUnder the direction of the assigned supervisor, the Maintenance Worker - Parks performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of a variety of City parks and other properties; and performs other related duties as required.
Essential Functions: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following: Participates in the maintenance and repair of play equipment, picnic tables, fences, and other related park equipment. Maintains and repairs tools and small equipment. Performs parts runs as necessary. Maintains maintenance records. Attends various meetings, including employee safety meetings, training sessions, and others, as assigned. Participates in City special event setup and teardown. Paints buildings, benches, picnic tables, and other park structures. Removes graffiti from buildings, benches, picnic tables, and park structures. Performs the cleaning and maintenance of parks and facilities. Prepares and maintains ball fields. Mixes and performs weed, pesticide, and fertilizer applications. Inspects playgrounds and makes necessary repairs. Sets, monitors, and makes recommendations to adjust watering schedules. Participates in the maintenance and repairs of electrical, plumbing, and irrigation systems and equipment, and maintains timers. Mows lawns and trims edges around walkways, planters, shrubs, and trees. Prunes or removes bushes and trees using hand tools and power equipment. Utilizes equipment such as tractors, loaders, aerators, riding mowers, boom lifts, trenchers, stump grinders, chippers, and various other power and hand tools to complete assigned tasks. Hand-weeds planters as necessary. Safely operates City vehicles and equipment. Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: High School diploma or GED and one (1) year of landscape or grounds maintenance and repair operations/field experience, which may also include irrigation systems; or six (6) months of vocational training in landscaping and groundskeeping and six (6) months of landscape or grounds maintenance and repair operations/field experience, which may also include irrigation systems; or a certification in landscaping and groundskeeping and six (6) months of landscape or grounds maintenance and repair operations/field experience, which may also include irrigation systems. License and Certification Requirements:
  • Must possess a valid California class "C" driver's license upon hire and maintain it throughout the length of employment with the City of Victorville
  • May be required to possess a valid California Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License with endorsements or have the ability to obtain a Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License within nine (9) months upon request and maintain it throughout the length of employment
  • Desired License(s)/Certifications:
  • Qualified Applicators Certification
  • Playground Safety Inspection Certification
  • MaxiCom Central Control Irrigation Certification
  • Knowledge of:
  • Applicable state and federal codes, ordinances, laws, rules, and regulations
  • Practices and methods in construction, maintenance, and repair
  • Irrigation systems maintenance and repair
  • Basic power and hand tools
  • Employee safety practices
  • Herbicide and pesticide application procedures
  • Physical needs of turf, plants, and trees, including removal methods
  • Safe and efficient operation methods for motorized construction and maintenance equipment and vehicles

  • Modern office methods, practices, procedures, and equipment, including software and database programs

Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work Incumbents may be subjected to machinery and its moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, intense noises, travel, and environmental conditions such as wide temperature variations, noise, vibrations, fumes, smoke, grease, odors, and dust Incumbents must be able to see and hear in the normal range with or without correction and communicate verbally and in written form with great facility and must be able to be understood Incumbents will be required to respond to emergencies after regular working hours and on weekends Incumbents must be willing to work an irregular schedule, which will include weekends, holidays, and/or varying shifts BenefitsSALARY: Employees typically start at Step 1 of the established salary range for their classification. Salary ranges are subject to the City's approved salary schedule and applicable salary adjustments. Part-time employees are generally hired at an hourly rate and are not eligible for City benefits or merit-based salary increases.
VACATION: Paid vacation is earned by full-time, non-represented employees based on years of full-time City of Victorville service:0–5 years: 80 hours annually6–10 years: 120 hours annually11–15 years: 160 hours annually 16+ years: 200 hours annually
