Location: San Diego, CA
Pay: $24–$32 per hour, depending on experienceA San Diego manufacturer of advanced electronic and electromechanical products is seeking an experienced First Article Assembler / Solder Technician. This role involves building complex wire and cable assemblies, including initial builds from new or revised drawings. The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently when documentation is limited and can identify build issues for the engineering and manufacturing teams.
Responsibilities: Prepare wires through stripping, tinning, lead preparation, crimping and solder wires and cables to high-density or low-profile connectors while meeting workmanship standards. Build complex cable and wire harness assemblies, including point-to-point, chassis and panel wiring. Read and work from schematics, wiring diagrams, assembly drawings, bills of materials and work instructions. Support first article builds by identifying drawing discrepancies, documenting issues and providing feedback to engineering and manufacturing teams. Route, lace and secure harnesses; install connectors and components using hand tools and small power tools. Perform visual inspections and electrical tests, including continuity, go/no-go, insulation resistance and automated testing. Troubleshoot defects and complete rework or repairs as needed. Work under a microscope when required for soldering or inspection. Complete production records, first article documentation and quality logs with labeling, color coding, trimming, epoxy application, potting and encapsulation as needed. Follow safety procedures and provide guidance to less experienced assemblers when needed.
Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; trade school training preferred. At least 5 years of closely related custom or prototype assembly experience in an electromechanical environment. Hands-on experience with wire and cable harness assembly, soldering, crimping and supporting first article builds and working from new or revised drawings. Ability to independently interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, assembly drawings and bills of using soldering equipment, hand and crimp tools, and basic electrical test equipment. Strong manual dexterity, attention to detail and experience with inspection, troubleshooting and rework. Basic computer skills, including Outlook, Excel and Word. Ability to work overtime, including weekends, when required.
Preferred: IPC/J-STD soldering training or certification and knowledge of lean manufacturing or Kanban systems.
