About the role
Project Engineer, Civil EngineeringSB&O is a Southern California civil engineering, land surveying, and planning firm. We seek a licensed Project Engineer to lead technical design for land development projects. You will work with engineers, surveyors, consultants, and clients. This is a design-focused role with growing coordination responsibility. Full project ownership belongs to the Project Manager role.
What you will do:
Lead grading, drainage, utility, and stormwater design. Prepare and review plans, calculations, drainage studies, and water quality management plans. Use AutoCAD Civil 3D to guide plan and model production. Resolve technical issues in surfaces, corridors, and pipe networks. Lead technical quality checks for assigned plan sets. Review the work of less-experienced engineers and provide clear direction. Sign and seal work within your professional license and responsible charge. Coordinate technical work with architects, landscape architects, surveyors, and other consultants. Support plan review and agency responses. Address technical questions during construction and coordinate with the survey and staking team. Track your task budgets. Raise scope and budget risks early, and support timely change-order requests. Communicate directly with client project managers on technical matters. Help junior engineers develop their skills.
What you bring:
An active Professional Engineer license in California. This is a requirement for the Project Engineer title. Typically at least 7 years of relevant civil engineering experience. We assess demonstrated design leadership and licensure, not years alone. Independent design experience in land development grading, hydrology and hydraulics, drainage, water and sewer utilities, stormwater compliance, and water quality management plans. Practical AutoCAD Civil 3D skill. You can review models and plan sets and guide other designers. Experience reviewing technical work, resolving design conflicts, and coordinating with consultants and agencies. Clear written and verbal communication. You raise quality, scope, and schedule risks early. Helpful experience Residential land development in Southern California. Technical support during plan review, permitting, and construction. Mentoring engineers and coordinating survey inputs or base maps.
