Our client is a long-established, licensed customs broker and international freight forwarder based on Long Island. They clear shipments at ports across the U.S. and handle a wide range of commodities, including pharmaceuticals, apparel and perishables. It's a close-knit business where each person's work has a direct, visible impact.
The Role:
Our client is looking for a Customs Compliance Director to own compliance matters across the brokerage. This is a hands-on role in a small business. The right person will take real work off leadership's plate, act as the go-to person for customer compliance questions, and step in wherever the business needs them beyond a narrowly defined job description. Key Responsibilities:
Act as the main point of contact for customer compliance questions and guide importers through regulatory requirements Manage Section 232, Section 301 and Chapter 99 tariff issues, including applicability, exclusions and customer guidance Audit CBP Form 7501 entry summaries for accuracy in classification, valuation, duty and tariff application Handle CF-28 Requests for Information, prepare responses and coordinate supporting documents with customers Prepare and file protests and Post Summary Corrections (PSCs)Vet and maintain customs powers of attorney and carry out customer due diligence Support duty drawback matters where needed Work with the entry team on classification and PGA queries, including FDA and EPATake on additional duties as required in a growing small business
Requirements:
Solid U.S. customs compliance experience with a licensed customs broker or importer Working knowledge of Section 232/301 and Chapter 99 duties, 7501 auditing, CF-28s, protests and PSCsStrong understanding of tariff classification and the HTSUSConfident, clear communicator who can explain complex regulations to customers Self-starter who is comfortable working across functions in a small team Technically capable, with the ability to learn new systems quickly Preferred Licensed Customs Broker (LCB)Cargo Wise experience. Candidates without it will be considered if they can pick it up quickly and complete an online Cargo Wise course before interviewing. Duty drawback experiencePGA exposure, particularly FDA and EPA
