About the role

Overview: Lewis Brisbois, an Am Law 100 firm, is looking for an International Trade Associate Attorney with 3-7 years of experience for its Washington, DC office. Lewis Brisbois’ International Trade, Export, Import & Investment Controls & National Security practice advises U.S. and multinational companies on the full spectrum of cross‑border regulatory obligations. The team handles matters involving export controls (EAR and ITAR), economic sanctions, tariff and trade remedies, Customs compliance, foreign investment reviews, and national security‑related enforcement actions. The practice regularly supports clients in aerospace, defense, technology, manufacturing, and other sectors where global operations intersect with complex regulatory regimes. The Associate will play a key role in counseling clients on compliance strategies, risk assessments, licensing, internal investigations, and government inquiries. This position sits in our Washington, D.C. office, providing direct exposure to federal agencies and policy developments shaping international trade and national security law.
Key Responsibilities: Advise clients on export control compliance, including EAR and ITAR classifications, licensing, technology transfers, and voluntary disclosures. Support matters involving OFAC sanctions, tariff classifications, Section 301/232 issues, and Customs enforcement. Assist with internal investigations, audits, and responses to agency inquiries from BIS, DDTC, OFAC, CBP, and related authorities. Draft legal memoranda, compliance policies, training materials, and regulatory filings. Monitor and analyze developments in U.S. and international trade policy, including national security‑driven regulatory changes. Collaborate with colleagues across practice groups to address cross‑disciplinary issues involving corporate transactions, government contracts, cybersecurity, and foreign investment. Qualifications3–7 years of substantive international trade experience, with a strong focus on export controls and ITAR. Additional experience in sanctions, tariffs, Customs compliance, or trade enforcement is strongly preferred. Excellent academic credentials, with Law Review, journal experience, or a judicial clerkship considered a plus. Exceptional writing, research, and analytical skills. Ability to manage complex regulatory matters and communicate effectively with sophisticated clients. Admission to practice in the District of Columbia or eligibility to waive in.
