About the role

CONSULTANT ANAESTHETIST (Ref: 260809) Full time or Flexible Part Time Contract Salary Range £115,331 - £153,247 per annum (pro rata for part-time posts) Plus: 8% On-call availability supplement Distant Islands Allowance £2,578 per annum (pro rata for part time posts)and relocation assistance up to £8,000NHS Shetland is the most northerly Health Service in Scotland and is a unique setting in which to develop your career. We are, of course, a small organisation, with circa 700 staff looking after the health needs of 23,000 people spread across 15 islands. However, what we lack in size, we more than make up for by way of highly integrated, person centred and multi-professional ethos that characterises every aspect of our operations. We are looking to appoint consultant anaesthetists to work for NHS Shetland at the Gilbert Bain Hospital, Lerwick. The Anaesthetic Department provides comprehensive general anaesthetic and critical care services. In addition, because of the remote nature of Shetland there is the necessity for anaesthetists to provide an enhanced trauma resuscitation service, to provide expertise in the resuscitation and stabilisation of neonates and paediatric patients, and to reap the reward of being able to adapt core anaesthetic skills to suit unpredictable and potentially challenging clinical scenarios arising outside the traditional theatre-based environment. We are offering full-time posts but will discuss alternative working arrangements including annualised hours. Pro rata annual leave will apply with 2 full weeks study leave. Depending on experience and qualifications additional leave may be possible in order to obtain the skills required to work in the most remote Health Board in Scotland. Rise to the challenge and enjoy the opportunity - Shetland is a wonderful place to live and work. Shetland offers low pollution, low crime, excellent schools, great leisure facilities, unique wildlife and amazing scenery, whilst still only a short flight away from the UK mainland. To find out more about living and working in Shetland go to www.shetland.org and/or https://www.shetland.org/life.For more information and informal enquiries contact Dr Pauline Wilson or Dr Kirsty Brightwell, Medical Director, via email mary.marsland@nhs.scot.Closing Date: 18/10/26 Interview Date: 05/11/26 Preferred candidates will be required to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update prior to a formal offer of employment being made. In promoting equal opportunities, we welcome applications from all sections of the community.

Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
