JOB DESCRIPTION: Looking for a Guidance, Navigation, and Control Analyst for Instrument Modeling and Simulation to support exciting projects with NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, CA.This role is critical for the risk reduction and requirement-definition phase of the project's mechanisms. High-fidelity modeling of electromechanical actuators and sensors is required to validate designs against testbed data and to inform the specifications of future hardware iterations. Furthermore, the project requires the ability to distill these complex models into low-fidelity versions for integration into larger system-level simulations. This role requires a professional comfortable with a dual-cadence workflow: providing rapid-turnaround study results for sponsors and maintaining long-term, high-fidelity simulation infrastructure.
What You Will Do: This role is critical for the risk reduction and requirement-definition phase of the project's mechanisms. High-fidelity modeling of electromechanical actuators and sensors is required to validate designs against testbed data and to inform the specifications of future hardware iterations. Distill complex models into low-fidelity versions for integration into larger system-level simulations. Provide rapid-turnaround study results for sponsors and maintaining long-term, high-fidelity simulation infrastructure. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: High-Fidelity Modeling: Maintain, modify, and develop high-fidelity behavioral simulations of electromechanical actuators and sensors. Model Validation: Tune and validate simulations against actual testbed data to ensure physical accuracy. Risk Reduction & Requirements: Utilize high-fidelity models to conduct risk reduction activities and establish technical requirements for future versions of mechanisms. System Integration: Create and maintain low-fidelity "surrogate" models that approximate actuator behavior for use in larger, integrated system simulations. Study Support: Execute rapid-turnaround tasks (2 to 3 week cycles) to support sponsor-driven studies, delivering results via plots and presentations. Simulation Maintenance: Provide ongoing maintenance and updates to the project's primary simulation environment to ensure stability for other project stakeholders. Vendor Technical Integration: Participate in vendor meetings and technical reviews to absorb critical design information, ensuring that behavioral models accurately reflect external hardware and software specifications. Technical Versatility: Act as a flexible resource within a small team, providing overlap and support for other GNC functions as bandwidth requires. Communication: Translate complex simulation data into clear, concise plots and Power Point presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
REQUIRED SKILLS: Requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science, Physics, Mathematics, or a related STEM degree and a minimum of 3 to 5 years of prior relevant experience. Experience in Matlab and Simulink and the C programming language. Experience developing clear and adaptable models of complex electromechanical systems. Experience working directly with external vendors and hardware suppliers. Experience with controller design and system stability using frequency domain methods (e.g. Bode, Nyquist, or Nichols Plots).
DESIRED SKILLS: Experience in signal processing. Experience with high-bandwidth mechatronics and dynamics. Experience in the research and development of precision pointing systems. Work in a complex multi-task, schedule-driven environment. Perform effectively with minimal day-to-day oversight. Advanced degree. Columbus is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
