About the role

Job TitleJob Description Within the team responsible for the development of the SAS, the engineer will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the stellar data analysis pipeline throughout the operational phase of the mission, respecting its technical and calendar constraints. Activities1. Pilot the operations of the SAS during all phases of operation: Supervise the execution of operations during the entire duration of the observations (nominal phase and extension phase), taking into account operational constraints and ensuring compliance with deadlines. Orchestrate the data processing campaigns by quarter (3-month observation periods), ensuring the systematic analysis of level 1 data provided by the SOC (ESA) to produce level 2 stellar data. Manage operational incidents: processing alerts, incident responses, and writing associated technical documentation. Represent the SAS during operational meetings with external partners, coordinating corrective actions related to interfaces, data reception or delivery. 2. Ensure the production and validation of scientific deliverables: Ensure the quality and compliance of the stellar products (Data Products) generated each quarter, as well as their delivery within the stipulated deadlines for optimal exploitation by the scientific community. Collaborate with the PLATO Science Management (PSM) partners to validate deliverables and ensure their adequacy with the scientific requirements of the mission. 3. Manage the maintenance and evolution of the SAS pipeline: Lead the corrective and evolutionary maintenance of the pipeline and its 30 scientific modules, coordinating: (a) The consideration of updates to specifications, in liaison with PSM partners and internal or external developers (SAS collaborators). (b) The integration and validation testing of modules (including "off-baseline" modules).Optimize the technical consolidation of interfaces, data workflow, and associated operational infrastructure throughout the mission. 4. Ensure documentation and project coordination activities: Develop and maintain operational procedures, as well as user manuals for operators and scientists. Write operational reports for each delivery, ensuring complete traceability of activities. (a) Lead internal follow-up meetings and coordinate exchanges with key actors: Collaborators (PDC, EAS, PFU, etc.) and PLATO consortium. (b) Space agencies (ESA, CNES), particularly during operational reviews (REVEX CNES).
Your Profile:
  • Knowledge/Skills Experience in software development Mastery of Python Knowledge of C and C++ would be a plus Mastery of databases Mastery of Git and continuous integration Project management methodology Proficiency in English level B2+ or C1 plus knowledge in stellar physics or astronomy.

Context: The ESA (European Space Agency) PLATO space mission, whose launch is scheduled for March 2027, aims to characterize the evolutionary mechanisms at the origin of the diversity of exoplanetary systems evidenced by past or ongoing missions CoRoT, Kepler, and TESS. Among other things, the mission aims to detect exoplanets analogous to Earth located in the so-called "habitable zone." To do this, the PLATO satellite will measure the temporal variation of the light flux of approximately 250,000 stars with very high precision. The goal is, on the one hand, to detect the presence of exoplanets orbiting these stars (by detecting the decrease in luminosity induced during the transit of the planets in front of their stars), and on the other hand, to characterize their host stars by analyzing their proper oscillations (induced by internal seismic activity), prerequisites indispensable to characterize the exoplanetary system as a whole. The satellite will be positioned at the L2 Lagrange point, and its nominal operational phase will be 4 years, with a possible extension of 4.5 additional years. In the context of this PLATO mission, the IAS has the responsibility to produce the official level 2 data corresponding to the characteristics of the observed stars, such as their mass, radius, age, rotation period, and oscillation modes. To this end, the IAS must develop and operate, within its Stellar Analysis System (SAS), the data processing pipeline that will provide all these parameters. This complex pipeline includes 30 scientific modules in its "baseline" version and a processing workflow that contains several branches. It also integrates libraries for integration and management of interfaces that allow controlling the proper functioning of the workflow in different operational scenarios (according to the type of stars observed). These libraries, as well as the entire set of scientific modules, will have to evolve, including after launch, with the processing of the first observation data. These implemented evolutions must be tested and validated and be perfectly documented. Work Environment Context The IAS is a mixed unit of the CNRS and the University of Paris-Saclay, located on the Orsay University campus (91). It is a laboratory of approximately 135 people that designs, develops, operates, and exploits space, rocket, balloon, or ground instrumentation. The laboratory is involved in major space projects in astrophysics, in connection with national (CNES) and international space agencies (ESA, NASA, JAXA,...). The research themes of the IAS are: "Cosmology and Extragalactic," "Astrophysics of Interstellar Matter," "Astrochemistry and Origins," "Solar System and Planetary Systems," and "Solar Physics." The technical developments of the instruments are led by the laboratory's technical services: optics, mechanics, computing, instrumentation, and electronics whose staff are specialized in their discipline. Furthermore, the laboratory has a national test platform node of the IR PARADISE, the calibration station, and contributes to the IDOC (Integrated Data & Operation Center) platform of the OSUPS for numerical aspects. The IAS is located on the Orsay University campus, 20km south of Paris, in a pleasant setting and well served by transport (RER 500m). The person recruited will be assigned to the IAS IT service, composed of 15 people, under the hierarchical responsibility of the PLATO project manager. He/she will eventually replace the current project leader and must take on his/her responsibilities related to the SAS. Possibility to request 2 days of remote work. Means provided: Office, laptop + desk dock + screen Access to the Openstack cluster of the Paris-Saclay mesocenter. About the CNRSThe CNRS is a major player in fundamental research on a global scale. The CNRS is the only French organization active in all scientific fields. Its unique position as a multi-specialist allows it to combine different disciplines to address the most important challenges of the contemporary world, in connection with the actors of change.

Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
