Job Summary: The Tai Lab in the Department of Biophysics at the University of Michigan is seeking a Research Laboratory Technician Associate to join our new interdisciplinary research group, launching in January 2027. Our lab investigates how bacterial cells build complex, resilient communities-biofilms-that play important roles in health and industry. We aim to understand how these communities develop, function, and evolve by bringing together perspectives from biology, physics, ecology and evolution, and engineering. Our approaches include quantitative single-cell imaging, microfluidics, bacterial genetics, systems biology, and computational modeling. The successful candidate will participate directly in research projects while contributing to the establishment and day-to-day operation of the laboratory. Working closely with the principal investigator and other lab members, the candidate will receive training in relevant experimental and analytical methods and develop increasing independence as their skills grow. As an early member of the lab, the candidate will have opportunities to contribute to its research directions and collaborative culture. This position is well suited to candidates with prior research experience, as well as recent graduates seeking additional research experience, including those considering graduate training. We welcome applicants who bring new perspectives and an enthusiasm for working across disciplines.

Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
