Position Summary:
The Tundish Refractory Installer is responsible for the safe and efficient installation, maintenance, repair, and removal of refractory systems used in tundishes for continuous steel casting operations. This position plays a critical role in ensuring refractory integrity, steel cleanliness, operational reliability, and customer satisfaction. The ideal candidate will be safety-focused, mechanically inclined, and capable of working in a physically demanding industrial environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Including, but not limited to, the following: Remove spent refractory materials, working linings, impact pads, dams, nozzles, well blocks and other tundish components. Perform tundish working lining tear-out using dump stand, manual and powered demolition equipment. Install working linings, (using robot or hand spray machine) and specialty refractory products according to engineering specifications and quality standards. Conduct refractory repairs using casting, gunning, ramming, and patching techniques. Install and service flow control products including nozzles, well blocks, dams, impact pads, and related systems. Inspect tundish refractory surfaces for damage, wear, or defects. Assist with tundish drying, curing, and preheating operations. Operate equipment such as jackhammers, forklifts, and other tools as required. Read and interpret work instructions, installation procedures, drawings, and specifications. Perform quality inspections throughout the installation process to ensure compliance with customer and company standards. Maintain accurate installation, inspection, and maintenance records. Work closely with operations, maintenance, engineering, and customer personnel to coordinate outage and maintenance activities. Maintain a clean and organized work area in accordance with housekeeping standards. Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, productivity, and customer service. Respond to scheduled outages, emergency repairs, and production support requirements. Perform other duties as assigned.
Safety Responsibilities:
Comply with all company and customer safety policies, procedures, and regulations. Follow Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, fall protection, and other applicable safety requirements. Wear and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE).Report any unsafe conditions, near misses, incidents, and equipment concerns immediately. Participate in safety meetings, training sessions, and safety improvement initiatives. Maintain a strong commitment to a zero-injury workplace.
Qualifications:
Required High school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Ability to work in a physically demanding industrial environment. Strong mechanical aptitude and basic hand-tool proficiency. Ability to read and follow written instructions and safety procedures. Reliable transportation and ability to work flexible schedules, including overtime, weekends, and outages. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform repetitive physical tasks.
Preferred:
Experience in refractory installation, steelmaking, continuous casting, foundry operations, construction, masonry, or industrial maintenance. Forklift, aerial lift, crane, or equipment operation experience. Welding and fabrication experience. Knowledge of tundish operations and refractory systems. OSHA, MSHA, or equivalent industrial safety training.
Physical Requirements:
Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment. Stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb for extended periods. Work at heights and in confined spaces when required. Tolerate exposure to heat, dust, noise, and varying weather conditions. Use respirators and other required PPE when necessary.
