About the role
Design Engineer Overview:
The Senior Design Engineer will design and develop custom gearing, enclosed gear units, and related mechanical power transmission equipment. This role will be responsible for taking designs from concept through detailed engineering and manufacturing, including performing engineering calculations, developing detailed drawings and BOMs, and supporting prototype and production activities. The ideal candidate will have direct gear design experience; however, the client is also open to experienced Design Engineers with a strong background designing power equipment, power transmission systems, gearboxes, rotating equipment, or other comparable mechanical systems from concept through production.
Design Engineer Responsibilities:
Develop custom gear designs, enclosed gear drive systems, and related mechanical power transmission equipment. Design mechanical systems and components from concept through production. Create detailed dimensional layouts, models, and drawings for manufacturing. Perform engineering calculations related to gear geometry, loads, performance, and mechanical system requirements. Perform or support bearing life, load capacity, stress, and other mechanical analyses. Use CAD software such as Creo/ProE, AutoCAD, Solid Works, Inventor, or similar to generate design models and technical drawings. Produce shop-ready drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and other engineering documentation. Reverse engineer existing gearboxes, mechanical assemblies, or components for overhaul, replication, or redesign. Collaborate with customers, sales, manufacturing, suppliers, and other engineering teams to define product requirements and ensure design alignment. Support prototype development, testing, troubleshooting, and transition to manufacturing. Apply engineering principles to develop practical, manufacturable solutions for custom mechanical equipment.
Design Engineer Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline required.5+ years of hands-on mechanical design engineering experience. Experience designing mechanical equipment, systems, or components from concept/scratch through production. Direct experience with gear design, gearing, power transmission, gearboxes, rotating equipment, power equipment, or similar mechanical systems strongly preferred. Experience with Creo/ProE required; experience with comparable 3D CAD systems may be considered. Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, manufacturing processes, materials, tolerances, and engineering drawings. Ability to perform engineering calculations and analyze mechanical loads and system performance. Experience creating detailed manufacturing drawings and BOMs. KISSsoft experience preferred, but not required. Experience working directly with customers, suppliers, manufacturing teams, or sales teams is preferred.
Before you apply
Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.
Your profile is current
It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.
Two examples you can talk through
Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.
A number in mind
What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.
Your notice period
Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.
Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
