About the role

Department: Department of Veterans Affairs The Environmental Protection Specialist serves as the Green Environment Systems Manager (GEMS) for the VA Black Hills Health Care System. The employee will apply specialized knowledge of planning and administering environmental compliance and environmental sustainability, using the Environmental Management Systems format.
Key Responsibilities: Major duties include but are not limited to: Provide professional and technical services related to environmental issues and program planning to achieve compliance with regulations and requirements. Inspect proper documentation for the transportation of hazardous materials and waste. Correct issues at time of inspection or develop corrective action plans to close out any findings. Advise organizations and services on procedural methods and process improvements. Develop and implement quality control and quality assurance practices for existing processes. Author reports documenting any regulatory non-compliance issues. Evaluate the need for additional or improved facilities and personnel development. Review construction project plans and specifications for pollution control features to ensure compliance. Serve as an expert on the interpretation of environmental regulations and technical issues. Advise senior level management officials within the health care system on the status of environmental programs and recommend changes in the process to meet new requirements and/or reduce environmental impact. Adapt various media to fit special and unique training and promotion activities. Identify process improvement projects to reduce environmental impacts. Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm Telework: ADHOC-May be authorized (Employees who Telework on an occasional, episodic, or short-term, and have completed required telework training and telework agreement). Telework eligibility will be discussed during the interview process.
