Orthopedic Surgeon Consultant – Medical Device Testing (Part-Time)

RoboMed‑DDI is a medical-device development company based in Laguna Hills, California. We develop innovative powered orthopedic surgical instruments and attachments designed to improve surgical accuracy, efficiency, safety, and surgeon ergonomics.
Role Description:
RoboMed‑DDI is seeking a part-time Orthopedic Surgeon Consultant to support the evaluation and testing of innovative orthopedic surgical devices, including powered surgical attachments and instruments.
This is a consulting and product-development role. It does not involve providing patient care or performing clinical procedures on patients for RoboMed‑DDI.
The surgeon will provide clinical expertise during simulated-use, benchtop, synthetic-bone, and cadaveric testing, as applicable. The consultant will evaluate device performance, usability, surgical workflow, ergonomics, and potential clinical risks and provide documented feedback to the engineering, quality, and regulatory teams.
The position is primarily on-site in Laguna Hills, California, with limited remote flexibility for design reviews, documentation, and technical meetings.
Responsibilities:
Evaluate orthopedic surgical devices and prototypes from a surgeon’s perspective
Participate in simulated-use, synthetic-bone, laboratory, and cadaveric testing, as applicable
Assess device usability, ergonomics, handling, performance, and integration into surgical workflows
Provide clinical input during design reviews and product-development meetings
Review intended-use statements, surgical techniques, instructions for use, and training materials
Identify potential use-related risks and recommend design or procedural improvements
Support verification, validation, usability, and human-factors activities
Assist in developing test methods, acceptance criteria, and clinically relevant test scenarios
Document observations and prepare or review test reports
Collaborate with engineering, quality, regulatory, and product-development teams
Maintain confidentiality regarding proprietary designs, test results, and intellectual property
QualificationsMD or DO degree
Board-certified or board-eligible orthopedic surgeon
Active or recently active orthopedic surgical experience
Experience with orthopedic power tools, surgical instruments, implants, or joint-replacement procedures
Ability to evaluate prototypes and communicate clear, objective clinical feedback
Understanding of operating-room workflow and surgical-device usability
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work collaboratively with engineering, quality, and regulatory teams
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with hip, knee, shoulder, trauma, spine, or orthopedic fixation procedures
Experience participating in cadaver laboratories or medical-device evaluations
Previous consulting experience with a medical-device manufacturer
Familiarity with FDA design controls, risk management, human factors, or verification and validation
Experience developing surgical techniques or training other surgeons

On-site participation required for designated testing activities in Laguna Hills, California
Compensation based on experience, responsibilities, and testing schedule
