Position Summary:
KEMRON Environmental Services, Inc. is seeking an experienced Equipment Operator to support environmental remediation and construction activities in the Fairmount, Illinois area. The Equipment Operator safely and efficiently operates a variety of heavy equipment used in landfill-cap construction, road construction, excavation of contaminated materials, truck loading, clearing and grubbing, backfilling, finish grading, and other activities required to complete site-remediation work. This position requires knowledge of equipment capabilities, maintenance requirements, and safe operating practices. The Equipment Operator is responsible for maintaining assigned equipment in safe operating condition and identifying and reporting repairs or mechanical issues as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operate multiple types of heavy equipment of various sizes and weights and establish required grades and cuts within acceptable tolerances
- Follow KEMRON and OSHA safety procedures and promptly report concerns to the Foreman, Superintendent, Safety Director, or HR Manager
- Follow daily procedures and protocols established through jobsite orientations, training, and project requirements
- Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and report defects or needed repairs to the supervisor
- Maintain assigned equipment in a clean and safe operating condition
- Assist with the installation and maintenance of traffic-control devices
- Control traffic at work sites by flagging and directing traffic through work areas, as required or assigned
- Assist laborers and/or technicians as requested by supervisors or foremen to support project activities and maintain safe and efficient site operations
- Complete required training in shoring and sloping in accordance with OSHA requirements, KEMRON SOPs, and applicable military safety requirements
- Physical Work Activities and Exposure
Equipment Operators must have sufficient visual acuity for both near and far distances, along with the coordination necessary to safely operate hand and foot controls simultaneously. Operators must exercise sound judgment, perform complex tasks, work safely alongside other trades and project personnel, and remain continuously alert and aware of surrounding conditions.
Work is regularly performed outdoors in varying weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat, and near moving mechanical equipment
May be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, vibration, dust, asphalt, and hazardous materials
Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
Work in environments where noise levels are frequently loud
Perform extended periods of sitting and equipment operation
Use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, equipment, and controls
Reach with hands and arms
Walk short distances, including over uneven terrain
Must successfully complete required medical monitoring necessary to work while using respiratory protection, including air-purifying and supplied-air respirators
Understand and follow KEMRON SOPs applicable to assigned tasks
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of heavy-equipment operating principles across multiple types of equipment
Ability to safely operate equipment under varying work and site conditions
Working knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in environmental remediation and construction
Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions associated with heavy-equipment operations
Ability to perform manual work requiring periods of significant physical exertion and exposure to varying or adverse weather conditions
Ability to work from construction specifications, plans, or blueprints and achieve required grades and specifications efficiently
Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions
Ability to maintain dependable and consistent attendance
Ability to operate GPS- and laser-guided indicator systems to meet grade specifications
Ability to determine the equipment best suited for specific project tasks
Education, Training, and Experience
Minimum of five (5) years of experience operating heavy equipment, including at least two (2) years related to environmental construction
Sufficient education to perform required arithmetic calculations and complete written documentation, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Current 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER training required
Current 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher training required, as applicable
First Aid and CPR certification preferred
Special Requirements:
- Must possess a valid and appropriate state driver's license with no active violations within the previous three (3) years
- Must maintain a driving record acceptable to KEMRON's insurance carrier and qualify to operate company vehiclesCDL holders preferred
- Must review, understand, and acknowledge applicable Corporate and project-specific Health and Safety Plans
- Sloping and shoring training required
- Equipment Operator Safety Training required
