Position Summary:
The Traveling Rail Laborer supports Heavy/Civil Construction and rail projects at various project locations. This position requires extensive travel and the ability to work wherever project needs arise. The Rail Laborer performs a variety of hands-on construction activities, including site preparation, material handling, excavation, track and rail-related support, and general labor duties. This position requires a strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and quality while working in active rail and heavy construction environments.
Responsibilities:
Comply with and actively promote all Safety policies and procedures, including reporting all accidents, incidents, and near misses, to ensure adherence to our Number One Core Value – Safety, first in everything we do. Understand and comply with all Company and project-specific safety policies and procedures. Travel to and work at various project locations based on Company and project needs. Perform general labor duties in support of rail and heavy civil construction operations. Clean and prepare construction and rail work areas to eliminate potential hazards. Excavate ditches or trenches by hand; backfill excavations; and compact and level earth to grade using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, rakes, and other tools. Load, unload, move, and distribute construction materials, tools, and equipment to appropriate work locations. Assist with the installation, positioning, alignment, and removal of construction and rail-related materials and components. Position and dismantle concrete forms using saws, hammers, and other hand and power tools. Safely operate hand tools, power tools, and small equipment as required. Complete required equipment reports for rack trucks, compressors, and other assigned equipment. Maintain tools, equipment, and tool trailers in a clean, safe, and organized condition. Work cooperatively with supervisors, operators, craft employees, and other project team members. Perform additional duties as assigned based on project needs.
Qualifications:
2–5 years of Heavy/Civil Construction experience preferred. Previous railroad, rail construction, or track experience strongly preferred. Must be willing and able to travel extensively to project locations as assigned. Must be available to work varying schedules, including nights, weekends, extended shifts, and overtime as project needs require. Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions. Must understand the proper and safe use of construction tools and equipment. Must be able to bend, push, pull, stoop, lift, carry, and perform other physical activities required for construction work. Must be able to perform strenuous work outdoors in varying weather and site conditions. Must be dependable and able to work effectively as part of a construction crew. Valid driver's license preferred. Necessary Attributes Must possess the ability to adapt to different personalities and management styles. Team player and with strong interpersonal and verbal skills.
