About the role

Engineering Manager, AI Tax PlatformNYC · Toronto (hybrid) Our client is building the next generation of AI-powered software for tax and accounting professionals. The company was acquired by a global leader in professional information and software, so you get a startup team's speed and ownership with the data, distribution and resources of a major enterprise behind it. They're hiring a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead a team building the AI and agentic systems at the core of their tax product. This is a builder-leader role, roughly 80% hands-on. You'll set the engineering bar for a team that starts at 4–5 engineers and grows to 10–12.
What you'll do:
  • Build the team. Hire, mentor and develop a high-performing group of backend and AI engineers, and help grow the broader engineering organization.
  • Set the engineering culture. Define what good engineering looks like, including code review, rituals and ways of working, so the team ships fast and with confidence.
  • Shape the agentic roadmap. Partner with Product, Design and Research on the technical direction of agentic tax workflows, from early scoping through production.
  • Stay deep in the work. Lead architecture discussions and design reviews, and write production code alongside your team.
  • Remove friction. Resolve cross-team blockers and drive process improvements that scale.
  • Grow domain depth. Build expertise in the tax ecosystem and the automation opportunities within it.
  • What you bring 8+ years of software engineering experience, ideally starting as a backend engineer and growing into a Staff, Lead or Manager role
  • A track record of shipping AI products 0-to-1 in production, such as LLM orchestration, RAG, agent frameworks or evaluation pipelines. You should be able to walk through what you built.
  • Strong backend fundamentals, preferably in Python and AWSCurrent fluency with modern LLM APIs and agentic tooling, including coding agents
  • The ability to lead autonomously, set direction without waiting on PMs, and communicate clearly
  • Experience at a strong product or SaaS engineering organization, whether a startup, scaleup or big tech
  • Formal management experience is a plus but not required
Compensation: $200K–$240K base, plus a 15–20% annual bonus (NYC)

Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
