About the role

Transportation Floor Supervisor Coordinates the servicing of County school buses and automotive fleet. Performs computer support functions, including technical troubleshooting, problem resolution, and user training for staff. Directly supervise the maintenance and repair of school division and general local government owned vehicles and equipment assets. Performs skilled administrative and technical work in cultivating and coordinating customer service relationships, supervising training, coaching. Ensures efficient safe operation of the shop's wash bays, and equipment. Performs duties as a substitute school bus driver as required, and other related duties as necessary. Manages workload balance by providing hands on repairs as needed to support scheduled repairs and customer service goals. This position is designated as Essential Personnel and may be on call 24 hours, 7 days a week for emergency situations, including weather and other building emergencies. Coordinates, plans and assigns/supervises the work of mechanics in the repair and maintenance of bus and automotive fleets; Generates reports as needed to collect data for tracking and informed decision-making purposes; Assists customers in the diagnoses of mechanical malfunctions; Manages inspections and services of shop tooling and support equipment to include shop and School Division equipment and advises department leadership of replacement needs; Builds and maintains customer relations to support division / department objectives and seeks feedback for improvement and efficiency; Attends meetings as scheduled by department leadership; Consults with manufacturer and service representatives to discuss technical vehicle and equipment problems; Oversees the County's state vehicle safety inspection records and updates as required; Develops and recommends policies and procedures for the maintenance of the fleet, consistent with state and local laws; Functions as a primary responder to vehicle accidents and is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, if required to address emergencies; Diagnoses mechanical problems and inspect major vehicle repairs; Provides technical advice to subordinates and supervision alike; Evaluate vehicle assets, and make recommendations concerning retention and retirement based on costs to maintain and on performance; Assists Fleet Operations Managers in the assignment of school transportation assets to routes; Assists mechanics with more difficult repairs applying hands support, as required; Evaluates performance of subordinates; Participates in interviewing and hiring of new personnel; Checks quality of documentation; Assists in evaluating hazardous road conditions and make recommendation for school closings; Perform duties as a school bus driver when necessary; Performs other related duties as required. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of personnel, both orally and in written form, ability to work independently, self-motivated, ability to establish and maintain records and reports, both manual and computerized. Possess ability to work and perform under pressure. Exhibit strong leadership in support of the Transportation Department and ability to lead others in a team environment. Thorough knowledge of the operating principals of diesel and gasoline, electric and hybrid engines and other alternate fuel equipment; knowledge of school bus repair and maintenance; ability to accurately diagnose mechanical defects and develop cost efficient repair strategies; ability to supervise and evaluate the skills and performance of vehicle technicians engaged in vehicle repair and maintenance. Graduation from an accredited four year high school or vocational program, and a minimum of 4 years experience working on diesel and gasoline powered vehicles.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Satisfactory health conditions as certified by competent medical authority. Must demonstrate the ability to successfully complete the Virginia Education Department training curriculum for school bus drivers and obtain a Commercial Driver's License with appropriate school bus endorsements within the probationary period. Work is typically performed between an office setting and an open bay bus maintenance facility. Frequent bending, stooping and crawling to inspect on and under vehicles as necessary. Physically capable to lift 100 pounds, safety glasses and leather steel toed shoes are required to be worn, and must meet OSHA guidelines. Frequent contact with Floor Supervisor and with local government and school division personnel.
