About the role
- Primarily responsible for management of our reforestation projects, including initial site evaluation, forest restoration planning, contractor mobilization and oversight, and ongoing monitoring.
- Provides support and expertise for our landowner outreach and education activities, including developing presentations and written content for outreach and education, helping to organize and present at outreach and education events.
- Works closely with the Vice President of Landowner Engagement to develop and advance relationships with interested landowners and partners, serving as a point of contact and providing technical expertise on forestry and other technical matters.
- Creates customized RFPs for contracted services; conducts bidding and contract procurement for site preparation, planting, and other tasks.
- Develops and maintains strong relationships with preferred contractors and vendors across the region, ensuring predictable and high-quality project outcomes.
- Prepares forest management plans, forest inventory analysis, environmental assessments, and forest histories; coordinates inventory operations; performs on-the-ground examination and delineation of forest areas for management and assesses forest conditions; develops guides and instructions for field procedures.
- Supports early-stage concept development through site evaluations, risk analysis, rough order-of-magnitude valuation and cost estimating.
- Collaborates with 3rd party consultants in carbon project analysis, validation and verification, in line with Verra standards and methods
- Bachelor's degree (minimum requirement) in forestry, forest ecology, natural resource management, or related discipline5 or more years of professional experience focused on forestry and forest management and/or significant experience managing ecological restoration projects
- Experience with contract administration and overseeing the work of contractors toward successful project outcomes
- Experience developing, planning, implementing and monitoring forestry projects
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, GIS systems, and GPSKnowledge of regional forestry of central Appalachia, vegetation management methods, resource management, basic soil science, plant and tree identification, and restoration ecology
- Familiarity with forest carbon methods, standards, and accounting frameworks a plus
- Prior work on mineland reclamation a plus
- Experience with drone operation a plus
- Strong technical, administrative, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work with a variety of people with diverse interests and temperaments
- Highly organized and motivated self-starter with the ability to prioritize
- Creativity, sense of humor, “can do” spirit, collegiality, flexibility, strong desire to learn
- Will likely need to use a personal vehicle for work duties. Bosland will reimburse mileage at the federal rate
- Familiarity with local threatened and endangered species, including habitat needs and legal protections
- Familiarity with local, state, and federal permits required for environmental/forestry projects
- Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and current auto insurance
- Access to reliable broadband internet service to enable remote work
- Ability and willingness to navigate remote rural properties and rough terrain, often on foot
