About the role

Strengthening and empowering all of the communities we serve. Do you love to eat? Do you love to share your discoveries about diverse cuisines and cultures? Do you believe — as we do! — that New Jersey's growing culinary scene is one of the most vibrant in the country? NJ.com, New Jersey’s largest media source, is looking for a passionate journalist to join our award-winning team as a Food and Culture Supervisor to help bolster its food and dining report with stories spotlighting the state's diverse restaurant and bar scenes. This hybrid role combines daily editing and team management with reporting and content creation. The Food and Culture Manager will oversee a small team of reporters, guiding daily coverage, assigning and editing stories, and helping shape our overall food and culture strategy, while also contributing their own high-impact journalism. We are particularly interested in a journalist who can help us broaden our coverage to reach underserved communities, and help identify and elevate restaurants and food trends in these communities. We aim to reach new corners of the state and new corners of our readership. We are also looking for someone who understands that reporting in 2026 spans beyond the written word and is enthusiastic about exploring alternative story forms — whether that's video, audio, social media or AI-assisted production — and how those formats can deepen audience engagement and expand the reach of our journalism. The assigning, editing and production of the following story types would be expected: news and trend pieces, reviews, feature interviews, lists, and projects. This role is primarily focused on food coverage but may also be called upon to edit and occasionally write stories across entertainment, culture and lifestyle — content that further links our readers to their Jersey pride. The base pay rate for this position is $75,000 - $85,000 annually. This position requires reliable transportation to visit restaurants and venues, cover events, and meet with sources. Our ideal candidate will have the following: A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of four years in journalism with a proven ability in editing, reporting, and writing required, preferably including experience in food and dining. Possession of a clear and engaging writing style. An ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately. A sound understanding of newswriting, journalistic ethics, and story structure. Experience using social media to find stories and promote content. An understanding of the methods and tools used to deliver content across a variety of platforms. An ability to work collaboratively with editors. recblid zyb8c6xzv5uci5wg6tl3mbflz5qoq7

Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
