Job description
Location: Bakersfield, CAProgram Dates: October 15, 2026 - November 20, 2026 Days: Tuesdays Time: 2:30 PM - 3:30 PMGrade Level: 1st-6th Grade
Job Overview: We are seeking an enthusiastic, patient, and dependable American Sign Language (ASL) Instructor to lead an engaging enrichment program for students in 1st-6th grade. The instructor will introduce students to the fundamentals of American Sign Language through interactive, age-appropriate lessons and activities. The ideal candidate has knowledge of ASL, enjoys working with children, and can create a fun and supportive environment that encourages students to practice new communication skills and build confidence.
Responsibilities: Introduce students to basic American Sign Language vocabulary and communication skills. Teach age-appropriate signs, including greetings, numbers, letters, colors, everyday words, and common phrases. Introduce students to the ASL alphabet and fingerspelling. Lead interactive games, activities, and exercises that reinforce ASL skills. Demonstrate proper hand shapes, movements, and facial expressions. Encourage students to practice communicating with one another using ASL.Adapt lessons and activities for different ages, abilities, and learning styles. Provide clear demonstrations, encouragement, and positive feedback. Maintain a safe, organized, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. Arrive on time and be prepared for each scheduled session.
Qualifications: Knowledge and proficiency in American Sign Language. Previous experience teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or working with children preferred. Experience with ASL instruction, Deaf education, interpreting, or a related area is a plus. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Patient, enthusiastic, dependable, and comfortable leading groups of elementary-aged students. Ability to make learning ASL engaging and accessible for beginners. Must be available for the scheduled program dates and times.
