About the role

Utility Line Locator / Line Patroller This role focuses on safely and accurately locating, marking, and documenting underground pipelines, electrical and automation cables, and other subsurface facilities owned or operated by the company. You will work primarily in the field across Western North Dakota, Eastern Montana, and Northern South Dakota, using company-provided vehicles and tools. The position follows a Monday-Friday schedule from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with additional compensated rotational assignments.
Responsibilities:
  • Locate and mark underground pipelines, electrical lines, automation cables, and other subsurface facilities owned or operated by the company using appropriate equipment and techniques.
  • Accurately document all located facilities, including locations, conditions, and any relevant field observations, in accordance with company procedures.
  • Patrol designated line routes to identify potential issues, ensure right-of-way integrity, and support safe operation of pipeline and related infrastructure.
  • Work in and around compressor stations and natural gas facilities while adhering to all safety and operational protocols.
  • Operate a company vehicle safely and responsibly to travel between work sites across Western North Dakota, Eastern Montana, and Northern South Dakota.
  • Use company-provided tools and equipment to perform locating and marking tasks, ensuring proper care, maintenance, and safe operation of all equipment.
  • Follow all regulatory, safety, and company standards related to utility locating, including proper use of personal protective equipment and safe work practices.
  • Communicate clearly with supervisors, coworkers, and other stakeholders to coordinate work, report findings, and address any issues encountered in the field.
  • Maintain accurate daily records of work performed, including time, locations, and completed tasks, in line with company reporting requirements.
  • Participate in rotational assignments, including extended or irregular hours as needed, while maintaining high standards of safety and accuracy.
  • Essential Skills:
  • Minimum of 3 years of verifiable experience as a Utility Line Locator, with intermediate to expert-level proficiency.
  • Demonstrated experience working around compressor stations and natural gas facilities.
  • Strong ability to accurately locate and mark underground pipelines, electrical lines, and automation cables using industry-standard locating equipment.
  • Proficiency in documenting field work clearly and accurately, including maps, notes, and digital records.
  • Valid state operating license with a driving record that meets company standards.
  • Ability to work safely in outdoor environments around mechanical, industrial, and electrical equipment.
  • Strong awareness of safety practices related to utility locating and working near energized and pressurized systems.
  • Capability to work independently in the field while managing time and routes effectively.
Additional Skills & Qualifications: Experience working in multi-state field environments, particularly in Western North Dakota, Eastern Montana, and Northern South Dakota. Familiarity with compressor station operations and natural gas infrastructure. Comfort working with various types of locating tools and equipment provided by the employer. Ability to adapt to changing field conditions, schedules, and rotational assignments.

Work Environment: This position is primarily field-based and involves working mostly outdoors in varying weather conditions. You will regularly be in and around mechanical, industrial, and electrical environments, including compressor stations and natural gas facilities. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with rotational assignments approximately every sixth week that are compensated at 1.5 times the regular rate. A company vehicle and necessary tools are provided for travel between sites and performance of locating tasks. The role requires adherence to all safety protocols and the use of appropriate personal protective equipment as part of standard field operations. Job Type & Location: This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Williston, ND.
Pay and Benefits: The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $42.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
