About the role

Position Summary: ASARCO Ray Mine is seeking an enthusiastic Mine Geologist - Open-Pit Production (Porphyry Copper) to be part of a dedicated team focused on supporting copper production at a world class copper deposit. The Ray Mine Geologist plays a critical role in supporting safe and efficient ore extraction by providing accurate geological interpretation, ore boundary definition, and field validation at an autonomous haulage, high-tonnage open-pit copper mine, which processes both sulfide and oxide ores. Reporting to the Chief Mine Geologist, this position ensures that ore control decisions are informed by field observations and geological data, and that ore routing supports both Mine-to-Mill optimization and LSXEW leach material performance. The Mine Geologist is instrumental in linking and integrating geology with operations, planning, and metallurgy to drive site-wide value generation.
Key Responsibilities: Execute daily open-pit ore control, including rapid ore/waste boundary updates, blast hole logging, and active mining shovel support to minimize dilution. Conduct detailed pit mapping, geologic logging, and sampling focusing on lithology, structure, alteration, and mineralization for accurate material classification. Partner closely with Drill & Blast, Short-Range Mine Planning, Operations, and Processing teams to support Mine-to-Mill optimization. Collaborate with LSXEW and Metallurgy teams to optimize heap leach material selection, copper solubility, and acid consumption compatibility. Assist in updating 3D operational geology models in Leapfrog Geo under the direction of the Chief Geologist. Participate in grade reconciliation, QA/QC of sampling procedures, and data integrity reviews. Ensure all field and documentation practices comply with site HSE standards and technical reporting standards.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or a related discipline. Minimum 2+ years of active, hands-on open-pit production geology experience within operating porphyry copper systems, with demonstrated daily involvement in ore control and grade reconciliation. Working knowledge of sulfide/oxide transitions, heap leach behavior, and Mine-to-Mill fragmentation concepts in open-pit environments. Hands-on proficiency in operational geological and mine planning software (Leapfrog Geo, Maptek Vulcan, or Mine Plan).Strong observational skills and a proven ability to work cross-functionally in active pit and office settings. Effective communication and technical documentation skills. Valid driver’s license. Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
