About the role

Marine Operations Barge MasterUIC Bowhead Transport seeks a land / sea-based Marine Operations Barge Master to oversee the barge operations at all ports of call. Responsibilities include but are not limited to stow planning, receiving freight, documentation, reconciliation, conducting safety meetings and writing reports. Regular travel throughout Alaska between the months of April through October is expected.
Responsibilities
Essential functions will include: Directing all aspects of barge cargo operations at any/all ports of call. Production of all required voyage documentation. Receiving cargo in preparation for voyage sailings. Loading and securing cargo to the vessel. Conducting regular safety and risk mitigation meetings. Training crews on all cargo operation procedures. Safely operate various cargo moving equipment (as needed).Extensive and frequent travel throughout Alaska between April & October.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Two (2) years of experience operating boats of various sizes (river boats preferred)
  • One (1) year of experience operating cargo delivery equipment (e.g., loaders, dozers, excavators, and various-sized forklifts)
  • Two (2) years of experience operating equipment on and off barges or other marine equipment
  • Valid Driver's License
Preferred Qualifications: Forklift Operator Certification. Knowledge of the Kuskokwim River from the mouth to McGrath. Physical and Mental Demands: Repetitive movements involving the neck, shoulders, wrists, and lower back. Static postures of the neck, shoulders, wrists, and lower back. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Regular walking, sitting, standing, and climbing. Ability to perform strenuous physical labor. Handling of cables, chains, and hooks. Effective communication via radio. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Working Conditions: Must be able to work all shifts, including overtime, weekends, and holidays, as needed. Required to adapt to flexible work hours or shift schedules that may fluctuate beyond standard duty hours. Work is performed in dusty environments and under a variety of temperature and weather conditions, including extreme cold, heat, wind, and precipitation. Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts, vibration, fumes, and airborne particles. Work environments vary and may include docks, ports, bays, beaches, waterways, office spaces, equipment rooms, warehouses, construction zones, and outdoor settings. While performing job duties, the individual may be required to work in confined spaces, at heights, and on uneven or slippery surfaces.
