The City of Virginia Beach Public Works Department is currently hiring a Motor Equipment Operator II/Dredge Oiler to perform a variety of labor and maintenance tasks on the City dredge, piping, and related equipment, including: Safely operate the skiff (small boat) to support dredging operations, including connecting and disconnecting pipelines, towing and maneuvering dredges and floating equipment, transporting crew members, and assisting with navigational aid maintenance and repair. Oil, inspect, and maintain dredge machinery and mechanical components. Monitor oil and fuel pressure and temperature gauges, perform routine engine checks every 30 minutes, maintain an operational log, and notify the dredge operator of any issues. Assist with connecting and disconnecting the dredge discharge pipeline, clearing debris and pipeline blockages, and placing, removing, and burying pipeline. Assist the dredge mechanic with preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and mechanical repairs. Assist with navigational aid inventory and maintenance. Clean, prepare, and paint dredge machinery and support equipment. Complete assignments as directed by the supervisor based on operational needs and workload. Follow instructions carefully, work safely, and communicate professionally with citizens, coworkers, and supervisors. Perform other related duties as assigned.
An Ideal Candidate: Experience operating a boat. Mandatory pre-employment physical. Must possess a valid Driver's License (VA or NC) CDL preferred; however, not required. Candidates who possess a valid CDL will qualify for a $2,000 incentive (stipend or bonus) The City offers a generous benefits package, which includes health, dental and life insurance, retirement and savings plans, maternity/paternity and parental leave, holidays and leave.
NOTE: This position is ALPHA I and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow), and/or in response to short-term departmental needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Minimum Qualifications: Requires completion of the tenth grade, plus two (2) years experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, such as motor equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have a current and valid driver's license.
