The University of Miami Information Technology & Systems Department has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Telecommunications Infrastructure Designer I to work in Coral Gables, Florida. The Telecommunications Infrastructure Designer plans, designs, documents, and coordinates structured cabling systems, fiber-optic infrastructure, telecommunications rooms, pathways, and related communications infrastructure across the University’s academic and healthcare enterprise. The position collaborates with Information Technology, Facilities Operations, Planning, Design and Construction, architects, engineers, consultants, contractors, and vendors to develop infrastructure designs supporting enterprise technology initiatives and clinical, research, and educational environments. Furthermore, the Telecommunications Infrastructure Designer serves as a technical resource for infrastructure modernization, renovation, and new construction projects while ensuring alignment with University standards, healthcare requirements, industry best practices, and applicable codes and regulations.
Core Responsibilities:
- Plans and designs structured cabling systems, fiber-optic infrastructure, telecommunications rooms, pathways, and related communications infrastructure.* Prepares technical specifications, design narratives, budget estimates, and scopes of work for telecommunications infrastructure projects.* Reviews architectural, engineering, and construction documents to identify and address telecommunications infrastructure requirements.* Coordinates infrastructure planning and design activities with architects, engineers, contractors, vendors, project managers, Information Technology, Facilities Operations, and Planning, Design and Construction.* Conducts field surveys, infrastructure assessments, construction inspections, and project acceptance reviews.* Provides technical support throughout project planning, design, construction, commissioning, and closeout activities.* Supports infrastructure redundancy, resiliency, and capacity planning for healthcare, academic, research, data center, administrative, and other enterprise facilities.* Maintains telecommunications databases, fiber documentation, infrastructure inventories, as-built drawings, telecommunications floor plans, cable records, and labeling documentation.* Assists with the development and maintenance of enterprise telecommunications standards, design guidelines, specifications, and documentation practices.* Supports communications infrastructure requirements for electronic medical records, nurse call, security, access control, video surveillance, wireless networks, distributed antenna systems, audiovisual systems, building automation, clinical technologies, and research technologies.* Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets. *This list of duties and responsibilities is not intended to be all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties or responsibilities as necessary.* MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: * High School Diploma or equivalent* Valid Florida Driver's License* Minimum 5 years of relevant experience required* Registered Communications Distribution Designer Certification preferred.* Learning Agility: Ability to learn new procedures, technologies, and protocols, and adapt to changing priorities and work demands.* Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with others and contribute to a team environment.* Technical Proficiency: Skilled in using office software, technology, and relevant computer applications.* Communication: Strong and clear written and verbal communication skills for interacting with colleagues and stakeholders. *Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience and/or certifications may be considered.*
