Description: SALARY RANGE: $65,000 - $95,000 per yearLOCATION: Norfolk, VASUMMARY:We are seeking a detail-oriented Electrical Designer to join our engineering team and support the design, modification, and installation of electrical systems aboard naval platforms and in support of defense programs. The Electrical Designer develops and maintains electrical drawings, diagrams, and Ship Installation Drawings (SIDs) that support shipboard and shore-based electrical systems, primarily in support of U.S. Navy ship alteration, habitability, and other HM&E projects. Working closely with electrical and systems engineers, the designer translates engineering requirements, field data, and reference drawings into accurate, standards-compliant design packages used for fabrication, installation, and testing.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Conduct detailed shipchecks and field verification to support electrical, habitability, and other HM&E alterations and overhauls aboard U.S. Navy ships. Utilize technical libraries and ship drawing indexes to identify, locate, and interpret as-built drawings and existing documentation. Create and revise precise electrical Ship Installation Drawings (SIDs) - including one-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, schematics, cable block diagrams, connection diagrams, and deck/equipment arrangement drawings - adhering to NAVSEA standards and quality procedures. Develop electrical design products from engineering input, shipcheck data, vendor documentation, and existing drawings. Perform cable routing, cable schedules, and interference checks to support installation design. Support electrical load analysis, equipment layout, and bills of material. Check drawings developed by others in accordance with ISO 9001 Quality Management System (QMS) requirements, and ensure compliance with applicable NAVSEA, military, and industry standards (e.g., MIL-STD, IEEE, NEC as applicable).Coordinate with engineers, production personnel, and customers to resolve design issues and incorporate review comments. Maintain drawing configuration control, revision history, and documentation in accordance with program and quality requirements.
REQUIRED EDUCATION: High School Diploma or equivalent; Associates or Bachelors degree in drafting/design technology, electrical engineering technology, or a related discipline preferred.
REQUIREMENTS: Minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical design/drafting, preferably supporting U.S. Navy shipboard electrical systems or other marine, shipboard, defense, or heavy-industrial environments. Proficiency with AutoCAD (AutoCAD Electrical a plus).Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical references. Working knowledge of electrical systems, components, and installation practices. Strong attention to detail, organization, and documentation discipline, with excellent communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and analytical skills. U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance. Ability to travel (20-40%) as required. Must qualify for or currently hold Secret Clearance.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with U.S. Navy shipboard electrical systems and Navy drawing standards. Familiarity with cable routing/scheduling tools and configuration management processes. Experience performing shipchecks or field verification in an industrial or waterfront setting. Active DoD Secret (or higher) clearance.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Primarily office-based, with regular visits to shipyards, waterfront facilities, and customer sites. The role involves air travel and walking long distances through large industrial facilities.
