About the role

Senior Controls Engineer | Automation NTH | La Vergne, TNAutomation NTH is looking for a Senior Controls Engineer to take the technical lead on custom automation systems — from first concept sketches to final startup on the plant floor. This isn't a "maintain what exists" role. You'll own projects end-to-end: architecting controls/software topology, writing PLC code that other engineers actually want to inherit, designing HMIs that make troubleshooting painless, and leading startup and debug when the equipment hits production. You'll also mentor junior engineers along the way, shaping how the next generation of the team builds.
What you'll do:
  • Lead conceptual development balancing specs, layout, cost, and lead-time
  • Architect controls/software topology across PLC, HMI, robotics, databases, and vision systems
  • Drive project documentation — functional specs, electrical/pneumatic drawings, BOMs, manuals
  • Own startup, debug, and deployment of automated equipment into live production
  • Design and implement functional safety systems to OSHA and industry standards
  • Manage electrical panel builds, field wiring, and pneumatic/fluid systems
  • Partner directly with customers to optimize systems for peak OEEMentor and develop junior engineers
What you bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, math, physical sciences, or related technical field 5+ years in industrial automation or controls integration
  • Expert-level Allen Bradley PLC programming and advanced HMI development
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, NFPA79, NEC, UL508A, and ANSI standards
  • Robot programming and/or vision systems experience
  • Strong communicator who's comfortable leading conversations with senior customer stakeholders
Details:
Hybrid: Office/Customer Sites, based in La Vergne, TN25–40% travel for implementation and startup support If you're an engineer who wants real ownership of complex automation projects — not just a seat on someone else's — this is that role.

Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
