About the role

Remove or repair all items on outside of Akron Public Schools; plow snow; cut grass; deliver furniture; operate backhoe, dump truck, tow motor and other heavy equipment. This is skilled work in the operation of moderately complex automotive and grounds maintenance equipment. Ensure safety of students Maintain buildings and grounds in a clean and presentable manner Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation Conduct lawn mowing at all facilities Conduct snow removal at all facilities Responsible for service and maintenance of trucks, tractors and lawn mowers Lead and participate in various labor duties such as digging postholes, breaking and cutting concrete, raking topsoil, shoveling and painting and repairing equipment Install and repair all guardrails, playground equipment and chain link fences on property owned by the Board of Education Repair cracks and holes in asphalt with hot and cold patch Repair concrete steps, landings, and walls. Operate rollers and graders to prepare tracks for track season Operate bucket truck to repair flag poles, hang banners/flags, remove trees/tree limbs, etc. Perform warehouse work, e.g., stock and restock furniture, take inventory, assemble new furniture and repair broken furniture Haul salt, sand, gravel, etc. using dump truck Use front loader and tow motor to load or move materials Haul furniture, deliver misc. equipment to school buildings using various size vans Operate various types of lawn mowers, seeding, aerating, and fertilizing equipment Operate truck with plow, salt spreader, or snow blower to remove snow and ice from various Board of Education properties on an as and when needed basis per weather conditions Graduation from accredited High School or G.E.D. A minimum of one year paid experience in grounds maintenance operations including moderately complex automotive and grounds maintenance equipment State of Ohio Commercial Driver's License Class A with combination truck and trailer Ability to listen effectively, actively Ability to problem solve Ability to work effectively with others Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing Ability to work independently Knowledge of city ordinances as they pertain to above outlined responsibilities Knowledge of the proper care and storage of chemicals Ability to read and understand verbal and written instructions, written warnings and labels Knowledge of the effective and safe operation of moderately complex automotive and grounds maintenance equipment Knowledge of the component parts of the equipment used, its performance limits, and the preventive maintenance necessary to keep it in operation This is a classified position. The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%. Since this examination is posted on a combined basis, two separate eligibility lists will be generated with promotional candidates considered before open candidates. Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment. NOTE: The competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates. The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 70% for qualifying, 20% for education, and 10% for experience.
VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to their passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.
DRIVER S LICENSE: An applicant having a valid commercial driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Commercial Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
