About the role
BASIC FUNCTION Under immediate supervision provides tutorial services to junior high and high school students on an individual and/or group basis.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This exempt classification is not intended to hold permanent employment status, but instead serves as a temporary role model and mentor to students.
Tutors must be currently enrolled full-time college students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Must be a high school graduate who is currently a full-time college student (at least 12 semester units for undergraduate students and at least 6 semester units for graduate students.
EXPERIENCE: None
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants will be required to provide a copy of their Social Security Card and photo identification to complete the hiring process.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT: Employees in this classification work in an indoor classroom environment; have a higher level of exposure to infection from students; have frequent contact with staff and students; and work around moderate noise levels.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Employees in this classification sit and stand for extended periods of time; may occasionally lift, push, pull and/or move up to 25 pounds; must bend at the waist, as well as kneel, stoop, or crouch repeatedly to assist students. Employees may reach overhead, as well as, above the shoulders and horizontally; must have dexterity of hands and fingers to demonstrate activities or run instructional equipment; must be able to hear normal voice conversation and speak clearly to exchange information, make presentations, hear in a noisy environment and locate the source of a sound; must be able to see to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Assists in the development and preparation of instructional materials for tutorial sessions;
Tutors students on various subject areas in small groups or individually;
Conducts mini-lessons in the process of writing in all subject areas, study skills, and other aspects of college preparation;
Assists students with the formal writing process, including brainstorming, clustering, read arounds, revision and editing;
Determines the concepts taught in tutorial sessions;
Evaluates performance and work of students and instructional materials;
Meets and communicates with and/or teachers regarding student progress, course outlines, and assignment schedules;
Assists in developing a resource file of enrichment materials;
Performs other related duties as assigned.
ADVANCED STEP PLACEMENT All new regular classified employees shall be paid in accordance with the salary range established for the class to which assigned. Initial placement will normally be the first step of the salary range. However, a new employee may receive advanced step placement with an approval from Human Resources. Requests for advanced step must be submitted in writing to the Human Resources office before the employee's first day of work. Approval will be based on the following criteria:
A) Additional qualifying experience beyond that required for entry into the class.
B) Additional education at the college level when related to the position, beyond the established educational requirements for entry into the class.
C) Evidence of currently receiving a salary greater than the first step of the salary for the classification.

Benefits earned by all permanent classified employees: Leaves: Sick leave, holidays, bereavement and emergency leaves.
Retirement:
Classified employees are members of the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). Employee contribution is 7% of gross earnings.
Benefits earned by all permanent classified employees working 20 hours or more per week: Insurance: The District provides medical, dental, vision care, behavioral health and life insurance for the employees and their dependents.
