ABOUT THE ROLE: We are working with a well-established E&S Property & Casualty insurance organization seeking an experienced Chief Underwriting Officer to lead enterprise underwriting strategy, portfolio management, underwriting governance, and risk oversight across multiple business units. This is a highly visible executive leadership role with responsibility for protecting long-term underwriting profitability, portfolio balance, and overall financial performance.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Oversee Corporate Underwriting, Audit & Quality Assurance, and Risk Engineering. Partner with business unit leaders to evaluate portfolio performance, financial targets, growth strategies, and risk tolerances. Monitor emerging legal, claims, regulatory, and industry trends that could impact future profitability. Ensure underwriting practices remain aligned with corporate guidelines, letters of authority, and reinsurance requirements. Partner with Actuarial to achieve technical pricing objectives and strengthen underwriting discipline. Work with casualty and property reinsurers and reinsurance brokers to strategically market and place reinsurance coverage. Partner with Enterprise Risk Management to identify and address emerging risks. Collaborate with IT, Actuarial, HR, and Corporate Underwriting to improve underwriting tools, processes, and efficiency. QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE15+ years of progressively responsible commercial lines underwriting experience. Deep technical expertise across Commercial General Liability, Excess Liability, Inland Marine, and Bind Property & Liability. Significant Commercial Excess & Surplus Casualty experience strongly preferred. Extensive relationships and experience with casualty and property reinsurers and reinsurance brokers. Proven experience managing and developing high-performance underwriting teams across multiple locations and business units. Strong portfolio management, analytical, and risk assessment capabilities.
