About the role
Operating Engineer IIThe Operating Engineer II serves as the hands-on expert behind the operation and maintenance of boilers, HVAC, refrigeration, and utility systems that support daily facility operations. Through preventive maintenance, equipment monitoring, system adjustments, and mechanical troubleshooting, this position helps ensure safe, reliable, and energy-efficient building environments. Success in this role requires technical skill, attention to detail, and a commitment to keeping critical infrastructure operating at peak performance.
Minimum Qualifications:
Two years of experience or training in the operation or maintenance of large stationary engines or mechanical equipment. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: For those positions in which incumbents will be working with and handling refrigerants, possession of an appropriate EPA refrigerant recycling and recovery certification for technicians will be required (as required under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 1990).Job Specification The official job specifications for this role, as defined by the State Civil Service, can be found here. Job Duties:
- Performs preventative maintenance on boilers and related equipment such as ventilating and refrigeration equipment, air conditioning machinery, generators, suction fans, pumps and compressors.
- Maintains logbooks detailing operations pertaining to boilers and or pumping equipment
- Performs minor repairs on boilers and related equipment
- Starts and stops pumps as needed; fires gas or oil fired boilers; adjusts airflow
- Regulates water level and reads gauges to check water level, steam pressure and operation of valves and auxiliary pumps
