About the role
Truck Driver (CDL) Drives large, heavy, and specialized on road vehicles having complex technical operating requirements and maintains vehicle and waste equipment relating to environmental service programs serving designated facilities on the Columbia campus of the University of South Carolina. Typically holds a high school diploma or GED. Requires 2 or more years of job related experience. CDL required. High school diploma and five years driving with a CDL preferred. Good driving record, attention to detail, attendance and reliability. Safety minded. Initiative. Team work. Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment and vehicles. Knowledge of local, state and federal laws and regulations applicable to equipment operation and waste hauling. Considerable knowledge of the hazards of equipment operation and of appropriate safety precautions. Ability to keep written records. Maintains campus dumpsters and dumpster areas by performing routine inspections and repairs; painting dumpsters when necessary; replacing worn or damaged lids; applying grease to fittings; baling cardboard; picking up pallets, fluorescent light bulbs, batteries and other recyclables, and disposing of them at appropriate locations; delivering and removing recycle bins; and keeping storage areas, and waste and recycle centers clean and orderly. Maintains commercial waste vehicles by conducting daily pre-trip and routine inspections, performing minor repairs, ensuring that preventative maintenance duties are performed according to established schedules, troubleshooting and solving or reporting mechanical problems, taking vehicle to approved wash facilities and ensuring vehicle is properly cleaned, and following all safety procedures, and national and local codes and regulations. Maintains and follows a safe, productive, cost effective, and comprehensive planned and corrective waste collection program for constant reliable operations relating to trash and recycling collection by operating commercial waste vehicles; establishing and following efficient routes and schedules; driving to approved waste dumping facilities and emptying truck when it is full; using the back-up camera. On a daily basis, maintains and completes accurate daily time sheets, route sheets, and records on all scheduled and emergency repairs performed on assigned equipment. Assists with the Facility Services inventory control by requesting, receiving and monitoring maintenance supplies, materials, and tools from Consolidated Supplies and outside vendors following established procurement policies and procedures. Attends meetings and training events related to customer service, safety, and continuous improvement. Open and closing the dumpster gates; picking up any waste that falls to the ground when the containers are emptied prior to leaving the dumpster site; contacting Campus Police or Parking Services to report blocked dumpsters; and reporting delays, accidents, or problems to supervisor while complying with national and local codes and regulations and exhibiting professionalism in conduct, appearance, and work practices.
