Nuclear Welder (GTAW, SMAW)
Position Overview: As an NR Welder, your day-to-day work involves performing a wide range of technical and specialized welding operations after successfully completing a multi-month certification process. You will work with manual, automatic, and robotic welding equipment, producing welds that meet or exceed NAVSEA nuclear quality standards and all prescribed quality control procedures.
Location: On-site in Mt. Vernon, INYour Day to Day as a NR Welder: Perform layouts, read and interpret blueprints/specifications, and set up, align, and level workpieces according to job requirements. Select and use proper wire, flux, weld gauges, and welding machine setting, including wire feed and electrode adjustments. Attach and maintain preheat equipment, verify material identity/characteristics, and install or remove mechanical round-out rings. Prepare and finish weld areas by buffing, grinding, arc-airing defect, and grinding completed weld to drawing requirements.
Required Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent, typically with a minimum of 2 years of welding experience is required. Certification/degree from an accredited welding program may be accepted in lieu of experience. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Ability to weld at extreme temperatures and in various environments, including elevated platforms, confined spaces, and multiple welding positions (such as lying on the stomach). Provide weld quality that meets NAVSEA nuclear standards and follow all written and verbal instructions Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area; perform minor equipment maintenance and assist maintenance personnel as needed. Accurately complete and maintain all required records and documentation.
Preferred Qualifications: Additional experience with dissimilar metal welding is desired. Experience with X-ray or ultrasonic ? tested quality welds, out ? of ? position or complex welding, heat ? treat practices, and familiarity with NDE methods is a plus.
