Position Overview: Primary Purpose of Position The Assistant Director of Student Staff Development, Training, and Selection provides strategic leadership for department-wide student staff talent practices while supervising an assigned portfolio of Residence Hall Directors and/or Graduate Assistants. The position designs consistent and equitable systems for recruitment, selection, onboarding, training, ongoing development, and retention of residential student staff. The Assistant Director is a full-time, live-in, twelve-month professional and a key educator within the Division of Student Affairs. The position advances student learning, belonging, wellbeing, safety, and accountability through staff leadership, responsive operations, and educational student conduct practices. As a designated conduct officer for Housing and Residence Life, the Assistant Director hears and adjudicates assigned student behavior cases and works within the department’s centralized case‑assignment and consultation structure. Primary Function of Organizational Unit The primary purpose of the Housing and Residence Life department is to provide housing accommodation and a certain quality of life for over 6500 students. To provide living accommodations which are clean, safe, healthy, and comfortable while enhancing a certain quality of life, which supports the academic mission of North Carolina A&T State University. The Residence Life program is designed to provide an environment which supports students in their academic pursuits, encourages interpersonal development, and offers opportunities for individual growth and challenge. To provide a quality of life for on campus students through a clean, safe, educational environment. Responsible for the overall leadership and management of all residence halls, the assignments of rooms, occupancy status of halls, housekeeping needs, maintenance concerns, and budgets, including operating and programming. Required Master’s degree completed or in progress in higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and relevant leadership experience may be considered. Three to four years of progressively responsible experience in student affairs, housing and residence life, student conduct, or a closely related setting. Demonstrated experience supervising, coaching, or leading professional, graduate, or paraprofessional staff. Demonstrated experience responding to student concerns, behavioral incidents, emergencies, or crisis situations. Experience hearing or adjudicating student conduct or community standards cases. Experience coordinating recruitment, selection, training, onboarding, or staff‑development programs. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of student development theory, residential education, and inclusive community practices. Strong supervisory, coaching, performance‑management, and team‑development skills. Ability to interpret policy, exercise sound judgment, and manage competing priorities in a complex residential environment. Demonstrated skill in student conduct adjudication, conflict resolution, crisis response, and educational accountability. Effective written, verbal, interpersonal, and cross‑functional communication skills. Ability to analyze operational and student‑behavior data, identify trends, and recommend improvements. Commitment to accurate documentation, confidentiality, fairness, consistency, and timely follow‑through. Ability to participate in an on‑call structure and support a 24/7 residential operation. Knowledge of adult learning, training design, facilitation, talent selection, onboarding, and workforce development practices. Ability to build compliant, well‑documented processes with clear roles and accountability. Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education Four or more years of full‑time experience in Housing and Residence Life or a comparable residential program. Experience chairing a Recruitment committee, Training committee, or management of recruitment, training, and selection of student staff. Experience with on‑call response and live‑on university housing responsibilities. Experience with conduct or case‑management software, such as Maxient or Advocate. Experience supporting students from varied backgrounds and needs. Experience using assessment findings and operational data to improve programs and services. Experience designing learning outcomes, facilitator materials, or competency‑based training. Experience with student employment or HR‑related workflow coordination.
