Job Description: A prominent organization in the insurance and social services industry is seeking a proactive and strategic Director of Finance & Controller to oversee financial operations and lead the modernization of the finance function within its subsidiaries. This role is vital for ensuring accurate financial management, reporting, and compliance while supporting organizational growth and efficiency. The successful candidate will work closely with senior leadership, including the CEO and CFO, to provide insights, develop financial strategies, and enhance internal controls and processes.
Responsibilities: Manage daily accounting operations for the organization, including general ledger activities, accounts payable and receivable, journal entries, cash receipts, and reconciliations. Oversee accurate accounting for cash, investments, premiums, expenses, commissions, and payroll-related activities. Monitor cash balances and maintain audit-ready financial records. Develop, implement, and oversee accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls. Prepare monthly and annual financial statements, including reconciliations, schedules, and supporting documents. Partner with finance teams on month-end and year-end closing processes to ensure timely and accurate reporting. Conduct financial analysis to compare performance against budgets, forecasts, and prior periods, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities. Support the development of budgets, forecasts, financial models, and business case analyses. Create financial dashboards, KPIs, and management reports for leadership and board review. Prepare and present concise financial reports and presentations for executive leadership and the Boards of Directors. Collaborate with external auditors and tax professionals, providing schedule and documentation support for audits and tax filings. Assist with insurance regulatory reporting and examinations as needed. Manage banking relationships, monitor cash positions, and support treasury and investments activities. Serve as the internal finance owner for QuickBooks, Bill.com, and related financial technology systems. Lead process improvements, automation, and system upgrades to increase efficiency and scalability. Support infrastructure growth initiatives, especially related to new insurance products and organizational expansion.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field 5+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and accounting controls
  • Hands‑on experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, financial statement preparation and month‑end close
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and analytical skills
  • Excellent organizational, problem‑solving and communication skills
  • Ability to communicate complex financial information to non‑financial stakeholders
  • Willingness to remain hands‑on while taking broader ownership of the finance functionCPA designation or progress toward certification (preferred)
  • Experience with QuickBooks and Bill.com
  • Experience with insurance, financial services or other regulated industries
  • Experience working with external audits and tax professionals
  • Knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling and Board reporting
  • Proven ability to improve accounting processes, systems and controls
  • Experience in a nonprofit, association, subsidiary or multi‑entity environment

The final pay for this position is determined based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant experience, skills and certifications, education and training, geographic location, market conditions, and internal equity.
