About the role

Company Description: Carter’s Compost is a compost collection and delivery service that transports food scraps from homes and businesses to local composting sites. Once the scraps are transformed into finished compost, the material is returned to local soils through subscriber pickups, donations to community gardens, and sales for use in yards, gardens, beds, and farms. The organization is dedicated to strengthening community resilience and beauty by caring for the land. Carter’s Compost focuses on turning food waste into fertile compost to help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, support environmental regeneration, and restore Michigan soils. Team members contribute directly to a mission-driven, sustainability-focused operation that connects people, food systems, and healthy landscapes.
Role Description: The Human Resources Officer will support Carter’s Compost in building and maintaining fair, transparent, and effective people practices. This part-time, remote role involves managing core HR functions, including maintaining HR policies, supporting recruitment and onboarding processes, and ensuring job descriptions are accurate and aligned with organizational needs. Day-to-day responsibilities include advising on employee relations matters, documenting HR procedures, coordinating performance feedback processes, and helping leaders apply consistent HR standards. The Human Resources Officer will also work on compliance with relevant labor regulations, support training and development initiatives, and collaborate with the leadership team to promote an inclusive, safe, and engaging work environment.
Qualifications: Demonstrated experience in Human Resources (HR) and HR Management, including oversight of core HR operations and support for organizational leadership. Strong skills in developing, implementing, and maintaining HR Policies that promote fairness, compliance, and an inclusive workplace. Experience in Employee Relations, including conflict resolution, performance conversations, and supporting a positive employee experience. Proficiency in Job Description Development, with the ability to clarify responsibilities, competencies, and expectations for diverse roles. Knowledge of employment laws and regulations relevant to part-time and remote team members. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document processes and communicate clearly with staff and leadership. Ability to work independently in a remote environment, manage multiple priorities, and maintain confidentiality and professional integrity. Prior experience in small organizations, environmental or sustainability-focused initiatives, or mission-driven nonprofits is beneficial. Relevant education or certification in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.

Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
