About the role

At Meta, we’re building the future of human connection and the technology that enables it. This means continuously inventing and developing technologies for the next generation of experiences. To continue our efforts in the path to AGI, and as we move closer to a future with intelligent robots and advanced AI models, we're hiring talent across a broad range of disciplines from robotics hardware to system software, machine perception, and artificial intelligence. These crucial projects and initiatives taken on by this team have never been done before, so you have a rare opportunity to help us create new ways people connect around the world. Reality Labs Research is seeking a Research Mechanical Engineer. This role is pivotal in tackling challenging mechanical/electrical design problems including designing and developing complex robotics that balance ergonomics, performance, reliability, and usability while maintaining the highest safety and quality standards. This role will be part of a cross-collaborative team responsible for initial concept development, analytical modeling, prototype design, construction, and testing; and it may involve research into Electro-mechanics, Sensor and Communication, and/or Planning and Control. Research Mechanical Engineer, Robotics Responsibilities: Design and Development: mechanical and electrical system design and analysis problems for robotics structure, mechanisms, power transmissions, electric components, and systems integration while balancing ergonomics, performance, & reliability Prototyping: Working with internal/external partners to support part fabrication and complex assemblies for benchtop and user testing Failure analysis: Build subsystem test fixtures, design tests, create test plans, perform tests, measure and analyze data, and refine design assumptions Collaboration: Work closely with a cross-functional team of engineers to deliver technical solutions
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering or a related field 6+ years of experience in Mechanical Design Engineering and with experience in machine design or electrical component development
  • Experience designing electromechanical assemblies (robotics, automotive, aerospace, industrial automation)
  • Experience with SOLIDWORKS, Siemens NX or similar CAD tools
  • Experience with prototyping processes and materials
  • Experience with embedded systems and communication protocols
  • Experience in tolerance analysis, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with automation equipment design and custom machine builds
  • Familiarity with traditional mass production manufacturing processes, including injection molding, CNC machining, sheet metal
  • Experience with control design and simulation for robotic devices
  • Experience working with testing and safety standards for robots
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize/redesign workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements)
  • Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews)
  • Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews)
  • Experience in Robotics and consumer electronic product design
  • Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologies
  • Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologies
  • Experience with simulation tools conducting finite element analyses: structural and modal analyses
  • About Meta:

Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
