About the role

About Kobalt LabsKobalt is the AI-native compliance operating system for financial institutions (FIs). Compliance is critical for FIs to get right, but most of their work still happens manually, in legacy technology or Excel. Banks, credit unions, and fintechs across the country use Kobalt to run third party due diligence, screen marketing collateral, and stay current with the ever-changing regulatory landscape. Since our Series A, we've grown revenue more than 5x and work with some of the most notable names in financial services, including Chime, Upstart, and affirm.
The Role: Engineers at Kobalt own products end-to-end, from understanding the customer problem and shaping the technical approach through building, shipping, and operating the solution in production. As a Full Stack Software Engineer, you will build the core product experiences our customers use every day. Risk and compliance teams manage complex, highly structured workflows involving large amounts of data, documents, approvals, and collaboration. You'll figure out how to make those workflows fast and intuitive, then build the frontend and backend systems that make them work. This role is a good fit for an engineer who cares deeply about the product they're building: how information is structured, how users move through a workflow, where complexity belongs, and how the underlying technical design enables a great experience.
What You'll Do: Build and ship new product features end-to-end across Kobalt's frontend and backend. Own major features from technical design through launch, working closely with other engineers and Customer Success. Build intuitive user experiences for complex risk and compliance workflows. Develop AI-powered features that help customers automate work that has historically been manual. Improve the performance, reliability, and architecture of our application as we scale. Work directly with customers to understand how they use Kobalt and turn their feedback into better products.
Qualifications: 3+ years of software engineering experience building production web applications. Strong experience building modern, interactive frontend applications and the backend systems that support them. Excellent product and UX judgment, particularly for complex or data-dense applications. Strong understanding of frontend architecture, application state, APIs, data modeling, and relational databases. Ability to take a product problem from initial concept through technical design, implementation, and production. High attention to detail and a strong bar for the quality, performance, and usability of what you ship.
Compensation and Benefits:
  • $250k base salary + equity, with equity based on experience and scope
  • Lunch provided in-office 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision premiums for employees and dependents
  • Paid time off and paid company holidays

Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
