Candidates who also possess training in language pedagogical methods are especially encouraged to apply. Teaching load is five courses per year, which will include language classes at all levels. Responsibilities also include developing courses in the candidate's area of specialty, coordinating study abroad; involvement in co-curricular activities; teaching first-year seminars; pursuing an active research agenda; advising and mentoring; and university service. Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in Japanese or a related field expected by Aug 1, 2027. Native language proficiency or near-native language proficiency in Japanese and English is required. Candidates must demonstrate both excellence in teaching and scholarly potential. Furman University is dedicated to fostering a vibrant and inclusive community through excellence in teaching, mentorship, scholarship, and programming. We believe that cultural understanding, inclusiveness, and freedom of inquiry, thought, and discourse are essential components of a transformative undergraduate education. The successful candidate will have the ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds and contribute to Furman's commitment to expanding access and opportunity to Furman's rich learning culture.
Application instructions: Applicants must submit materials no later than September 20, 2026 as part of the application process. Applicants should submit the following documents as a single PDF in the order listed: a letter of interest, C.V., statement of teaching philosophy, and complete contact information for three references. The statement of teaching philosophy should describe your inclusive teaching and mentoring efforts, broadly conceived, and how your teaching and mentoring may contribute to a liberal arts and sciences community that aims, among other things, to "honor inquiry, promote diversity, [and] strive for equity" (FUture Focused). You may also discuss any relevant professional development, service contributions, or other experiences that have refined your skills or demonstrate your efforts in these areas. Preliminary interviews will be conducted remotely via video conference.

Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
