About the role
- Assist with and lead insurance and reinsurance underwriting, including risk selection and aggregate management.
- Focus on growing our commercial book in admitted and surplus lines, including parametric
- Develop market distribution channels and build strong relationships with wholesale and retail brokers to grow a quality book of business.
- Review, analyze, and price new and renewal submissions for property, catastrophe, and parametric weather risks within your authority.
- Partner with data science and risk modeling teams to use catastrophe models, weather data, and exposure analytics in pricing decisions.
- Structure parametric triggers, limits, and payout terms that fit each client's actual exposure.
- Prepare underwriting files, referrals, and pricing rationale for capacity partners and internal review.
- Monitor portfolio aggregation, accumulation, and loss performance, and flag concentrations or trends.
- Make sure all business is written within underwriting guidelines, authority limits, and regulatory requirements, including surplus lines rules.
- Help refine underwriting guidelines, rating tools, and workflows as products and markets expand.
- Mentor junior underwriters and analysts as the team grows.
- 4+ years of experience in commercial property underwriting, property brokerage, or a closely related role.
- Solid understanding of catastrophe exposure (wind, wildfire, flood, or similar) and how it drives pricing and capacity.
- Experience in the excess and surplus (E&S) lines market, working with wholesale brokers.
- Comfort working with data, cat model output, and pricing tools; strong Excel skills.
- Sound judgment on risk selection, and the confidence to decline or restructure business that doesn't fit.
- Clear written and verbal communication with brokers, partners, and internal teams.
- An active Property & Casualty license, or willingness to obtain one within 90 days of hire.

- Experience at an MGA, insurtech, or other technology-driven underwriting platform.
- Exposure to parametric insurance, weather derivatives, or alternative risk transfer.
- Familiarity with catastrophe modeling platforms (e.g., Verisk, Moody's RMS) or in-house ML pricing models.
- Working knowledge of Python, SQL, or similar tools for analyzing exposure data.
