Summary:
We are seeking a Battery Cell Manufacturing Engineer to join a battery manufacturing engineering team focused on process advancement, pre-production trials, problem-solving, and continuous improvement. The primary responsibility of this role is to lead planning and problem-solving activities for pre-production trials, including material, product, and process evaluations. The engineer will develop and improve systems and procedures for efficient issue identification, root cause analysis, resolution, prevention of recurrence, and knowledge capture. The role requires strong knowledge of battery chemistry, cell manufacturing processes, trial management, and battery cell performance evaluation. The engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams, equipment partners, manufacturing, quality, research and development, and other stakeholders to deliver engineering solutions and drive process improvements.
Responsibilities:
Lead cross-functional teams in collaboration with equipment and manufacturing engineering groups. Plan, manage, and execute pre-production trials and confirmation activities. Evaluate battery materials, products, and processes and identify opportunities for improvement. Engage with internal and external partners to resolve material, product, and process issues. Develop and implement detailed trial plans for confirmation and problem-solving activities using structured problem-solving or Lean methodologies. Lead root cause analysis, issue resolution, recurrence prevention, and continuous improvement activities. Manage trial schedules, deliverables, status reporting, and project milestones. Confirm trial KPIs and evaluate battery cell performance using analytical tools and quality methodologies. Prepare detailed technical reports and executive-level summary reports to capture organizational learning. Provide input into process and equipment plans, specifications, and improvements to prevent recurring issues. Support new material introduction, validation, change-point management, and confirmation activities. Interpret and apply product and process specifications, engineering drawings, technical data, and trial results. Develop and improve systems and procedures for problem-solving, learning capture, and process standardization. Maintain activity status visibility, provide regular reporting, and conduct continuous reflection on project progress. Lead relationships with internal teams, suppliers, equipment partners, and other external stakeholders. Support department-level strategic initiatives and continuous improvement activities. Standardize and improve departmental systems, processes, and engineering practices. Mentor and train team members on battery technology, trial planning and execution, data analysis, and structured problem-solving principles. Support the development and application of knowledge related to good process and product conditions. Drive individual professional development, seek feedback, and monitor progress toward development goals. Support weekend, shutdown, and overtime activities as required. Travel domestically and internationally, including approximately 10% travel to Japan, primarily for equipment testing and related engineering activities.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field. Minimum 3 years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment. Experience in manufacturing production preparation, including project schedules, deliverables, process and equipment planning, specifications, procurement, installation, and trial activities.2+ years of experience with winding, cell assembly, and electrolyte filling for automotive battery cells; 5+ years preferred. Experience with battery cell products, manufacturing processes, equipment, and/or trial activities. Knowledge of battery chemistry and materials evaluation. Experience identifying, applying, and confirming good process and product conditions. Experience coordinating with cross-functional teams within a large corporate or manufacturing organization, including production engineering, manufacturing, R&D, and Quality. Experience presenting technical information and project status to senior leadership. Ability to interpret and apply product/process specifications, engineering drawings, technical data, and manufacturing requirements. Experience with new material introduction, validation, change-point management, and confirmation. Strong problem-solving, analytical, project management, and communication skills. Ability to work weekends and during plant shutdowns as required. Ability to work overtime of up to 25%.Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally, up to 15% as required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience applying Lean Manufacturing or structured problem-solving methodologies. Experience with product, process, and equipment simultaneous engineering for new model or product launches. Experience working in manufacturing plant production operations. Experience with data analytics tools, techniques, and methodologies. Experience with digital engineering software and procedures, including the ability to read, interpret, and modify model data. Japanese language proficiency, including verbal and written communication. Experience in battery, automotive, semiconductor, chemical, or advanced materials manufacturing environments.
