About the role

The Firm We're partnering with an established systematic hedge fund in New York, running a lean, high-performing team relative to its AUM. The firm is rebuilding its data function from the ground up and looking for an early, foundational hire to help shape it.
The Role: You'll work directly alongside the person leading this rebuild as their first engineering hire on the data side, effectively a left-hand engineer helping build the function from scratch rather than joining an established team. This is a greenfield opportunity: expect to have real input into architecture and tooling decisions rather than executing a pre-defined backlog. You'll need to be comfortable operating with a lot of autonomy and thinking out loud through problems rather than just picking up tickets.
What You'll Be Doing: Help design and build a new data function from the ground up, working closely with the team lead Own technical decisions around data infrastructure, tooling, and architecture as the function scales Be a genuine thought partner, someone the lead can bounce ideas off of, not just execute assigned tasks Operate with significant autonomy in a small, high-trust team What We're Looking For 2-7 years of software/data engineering experience Strong Python, ideally applied to building ETL pipelines, onboarding and integrating vendor data feeds, and building internal tooling/APIs that other teams rely on, not just scripting one-off analysis Strong SQL (comfortable well beyond basic joins and indexing)Genuinely autonomous and opinionated, comfortable pushing back and thinking through problems out loud rather than just taking direction

Before you apply

Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.

Your profile is current

It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.

Two examples you can talk through

Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.

A number in mind

What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.

Your notice period

Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.

Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
