About the role
We are looking for experienced Freelance Curriculum Writers to help author an innovative K-5 English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum grounded in structured literacy and knowledge-building principles!
About the Role:
As a Freelance ELA Writer, you will author short-form fiction and nonfiction texts designed to captivate elementary students. Your work will span two primary writing formats:
Decodable Texts: Strictly adhering to targeted phonics scopes, sequences, and high-frequency word lists for early readers.
Authentic Read-Alouds: Writing rich, complex short-form texts free from phonetic restrictions to build vocabulary and background knowledge.
All content will directly reinforce core knowledge-building unit concepts (e.g., science, history, community).
Key Responsibilities:
Draft Engaging Content: Write developmentally appropriate, highly engaging, and culturally responsive short stories and informational pieces.
Navigate Phonics Constraints: Strictly follow provided phonics sequences to write high-quality decodable readers.
Craft Read-Alouds: Author complex texts to boost student vocabulary and world knowledge.
Integrate Concepts: Weave specific unit themes and Tier-2 vocabulary seamlessly into the content.
Revise & Refine: Collaborate with curriculum editors and literacy experts to refine texts based on feedback.
Qualifications:
Writing Experience: Proven experience writing children's literature or educational curriculum texts (portfolio required; published authors strongly preferred).
Literacy Expertise: Deep understanding of the Science of Reading, structured literacy, and text decodability.
Versatile Storytelling: Ability to craft compelling narratives and clear informational texts within tight phonetic constraints.
Attention to Detail: Meticulous approach to following exact scope and sequence guidelines.
Background: K-5 classroom teaching, literacy instruction, or educational content design background preferred.
Before you apply
Applying takes about a minute. These four things decide how fast it moves after that.
Your profile is current
It's what we read first. Occupations, seniority and locations matter more than a long history.
Two examples you can talk through
Not a portfolio — just two pieces of work where you can explain the decisions and what you'd change.
A number in mind
What you're on now and what would make you move. We negotiate better when we know both.
Your notice period
Employers plan around it, and it's the question that stalls offers most often.
Once you apply, someone reads it and calls you before anything reaches the employer — usually within two working days.
