About the role
Construction ControllerPosition SummaryWe are seeking an experienced Construction Controller to lead the accounting and financial operations for a growing construction company. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience within a general contractor, commercial construction, heavy civil, or specialty subcontractor environment, with deep expertise in construction accounting, job costing, Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, and project financial management.This role will oversee all accounting functions while partnering closely with operations and project management to ensure accurate project reporting, strong internal controls, and timely financial information.ResponsibilitiesLead all accounting and financial operations for the company.Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.Prepare and review monthly financial statements in accordance with GAAP.Oversee Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and project profitability reporting.Manage percentage-of-completion (POC) accounting and revenue recognition (ASC 606).Monitor job costs, committed costs, cost-to-complete projections, and project margins.Partner with Project Managers to review project budgets, forecasts, and financial performance.Review project cost reports and identify cost overruns or margin risks.Oversee project accounting, including:Job Cost AccountingCost CodesSchedule of Values (SOV)AIA Progress BillingsChange OrdersRetainageSubcontractor BillingsManage cash flow forecasting and working capital.Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, equipment accounting, and general ledger.Ensure accurate balance sheet reconciliations and account analysis.Prepare annual budgets and periodic forecasts.Develop and maintain internal controls and accounting policies.Coordinate annual audits, tax filings, bonding company reporting, and lender compliance.Manage banking relationships and treasury activities.Produce financial dashboards and KPI reporting for executive leadership.Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team.Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and automate workflows.Required QualificationsBachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.CPA preferred.10+ years of progressive accounting experience.Minimum 5 years of Controller or Assistant Controller experience within a construction company.Experience working for a General Contractor, Commercial Construction, Heavy Civil, Industrial Construction, Infrastructure Contractor, or Specialty Contractor.Strong knowledge of:Construction AccountingWork-in-Progress (WIP) ReportingPercentage-of-Completion (POC) AccountingJob Cost AccountingRevenue Recognition (ASC 606)Cost-to-Complete AnalysisProject ForecastingCash Flow ManagementInternal ControlsExperience working with project managers and operations teams.Experience with bonding, surety reporting, and banking relationships.Preferred Software ExperienceVista by ViewpointCMiCSage 300 ConstructionSage Intacct ConstructionFoundation SoftwareSpectrumProcoreAutodesk Construction CloudJD EdwardsMicrosoft DynamicsDeltek ComputerEaseAcumatica ConstructionTimberlineHeavyJobAdvanced Microsoft Excel (Pivot Tables, Power Query, XLOOKUP)Preferred SkillsWork-in-Progress (WIP) ReportingPercentage-of-Completion AccountingJob Cost AccountingProject Cost ControlsCost-to-Complete ForecastingBudgeting & ForecastingFinancial ReportingCash Flow ManagementConstruction ContractsAIA BillingSchedule of Values (SOV)Change OrdersRetainage AccountingProject Profitability AnalysisEquipment Cost AllocationLabor Cost AnalysisInternal ControlsERP ImplementationsFinancial Planning & AnalysisLeadership and Team DevelopmentPreferred Industry BackgroundCandidates must come from a construction company and have direct experience in one or more of the following sectors:Commercial ConstructionGeneral ContractingHeavy Civil ConstructionHighway & Bridge ConstructionInfrastructureIndustrial ConstructionMechanical, Electrical & Plumbing (MEP)ConcreteRoofingSite Development ContractorsUtility ContractorsSpecialty ContractorsCandidates with backgrounds exclusively in real estate development, property management, homebuilding, or residential development will not be considered.
