Title: Welding Engineer
Location: Waukesha, WI (Relocation can be provided)
Position Overview: We are seeking a skilled Welding Engineer to develop, optimize, and oversee welding processes for production and fabrication. The role focuses on ensuring weld quality, improving efficiency, and supporting automation efforts across MIG/GMAW and GTAW/TIG processes, including robotic welding with Fanuc and ABB systems. The Welding Engineer will apply metallurgical knowledge to resolve welding issues, qualify procedures, and support continuous improvement initiatives to meet safety, quality, and production targets.
Key Responsibilities: Design, develop, and qualify welding procedures (WPS/PQR) for MIG/GMAW and GTAW/TIG applications. Program, commission, and troubleshoot robotic welding systems (Fanuc, ABB) and integrate welding heads and fixtures for automated cells. Perform root cause analysis of weld defects, implement corrective actions, and lead welding-related problem-solving efforts. Create and maintain welding documentation including process specifications, inspection plans, procedure qualifications, and operator work instructions. Collaborate with design, manufacturing, quality, and maintenance teams to ensure weldability, manufacturability, and compliance with codes and standards (e.g., ASME, AWS).Provide training and technical support to weld operators and technicians on welding techniques, safety, and equipment operation. Evaluate consumables and shielding gas selection, perform welding trials, and optimize parameters for productivity and quality. Apply metallurgical principles to assess weld microstructure, pre/post-weld heat treatments, and material compatibility. Support continuous improvement projects to reduce cycle time, scrap, and rework while maintaining weld integrity and safety.
Qualifications: Bachelors degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience. Strong hands-on experience with MIG/GMAW and GTAW/TIG welding processes and qualifications. Experience programming, configuring, and troubleshooting robotic welding systems (Fanuc and/or ABB preferred).Practical knowledge of welding standards and codes (AWS, ASME) and experience with procedure qualification testing (PQR/WPS).Understanding of metallurgy related to welding, heat-affected zones, and material selection. Proven ability to perform nondestructive testing oversight and interpret inspection results (e.g., visual, UT, PT, MT) is a plus. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally. Willingness to work in a manufacturing environment and participate in shop floor troubleshooting and continuous improvement activities.
